Year 1 Blog
Recently, we have been reading the story of Stick Man. We have learnt the story using actions and made our own story maps to show some of the main events. We then went on to 'innovate' the story by changing the characters and who they met along the way e.g. Stone Man. The children enjoyed drawing their own innovated story maps and some have also built their own 'Stick Man' at Forest School using sticks, stones and other natural materials.
In R.E we have been learning how special people are remembered in the Sikh and Hindu faiths. We have been learning how the Sikh faith celebrate the birthday of Guru Nanak, by singing songs and sending birthday cards to each other.
We have also been learning how the Hindu faith celebrates Diwali and why people use lights to remember Rama and Sita as special people. We learnt the story of Rama and Sita and the triumph of good over evil. We had great fun acting out what the characters in the story did and how they would have felt.
We have been thinking about people who are special to us and why.
This week we have been thinking about friends and how it's the things they do and say to us that makes them special.
Last Thursday, Andy and Lisa from Eden Falconry spent the morning with the Year 1 classes. They brought with them four owls of various sizes and we were able to watch them fly, find out about their life cycle and eating habits. We then got the chance to draw the owls, ask questions and have photographs with the owls.
The children really enjoyed the morning and got a lot out of the talk and being able to interact with both Andy and Lisa. They came up with some fascinating questions and we felt that we all came away having learnt lots of new things about these special birds of prey.
Last week Year 1 visited Pizza Express and were able to find out about different ingredients, before going on to make their own pizzas.
We had a lot of fun sampling different toppings, kneading the dough and making our own pizzas. We were then able to bring them back to school in a special box and try them at lunch time.
Following our visit we have been finding out more about the different food groups and what makes up a balanced diet.
In Literacy this week we have been reading some superhero stories and looking at the way the text and pictures are set out. We made lists of action words and then made up some short dramatic scenes incorporating some of these words. We are going to create our own comic strips using speech bubbles and sound words over the next week.
The last day of term Year 1 had the pleasure of Year 5 reading them their Easter story books. Each Year 5 child paired up with a child from Year 1. Year 5 had written a recount of the Easter story. The children really enjoyed this activity and liked being read to by older children in the school.
Here are some comments from the children in Year 1:
"The pictures helped me to understand the story."
"I liked being read to and looking at the drawings."
"I learnt about some things that I didn't know about."
Friday afternoon we invited Foundation Stage to share the Australian counting books we had been making over the week. We chose up to 5 animals and discussed how they moved. We drew pictures of the animals using pictures from the internet and photos Mrs French had taken on her recent trip. The children enjoyed reading them to the younger children.
Last Friday the children in Year 1 came in to school with some beautiful crowns that they had made at home in preparation for the special
French celebration of la Fete des Rois which we celebrated within school.
In the afternoon all of KS1 met in the hall for a special party. The children were able to dance with their friends and sing some French songs.
They were then offered a drink and given a special cake representing a Galette des Rois (some of which had a mark on the bottom of the case
indicating the feve that would be found in the French cake). Those children who found a mark were called to the front to be celebrated as our
Kings and Queens for the rest of the party.
The children really enjoyed themselves and were able to get a better understanding of the French Christmas traditions.
It is good to see all the children back in school today. From what they have been telling us, they have all enjoyed their holiday.
Our Science topic for this half term is 'Seasonal Changes' and we will be recording the weather;
finding out about animal hibernation and migration; the Sun and how shadows are formed as well
as learning about the seasons.
It would help if you could look at a calendar with your child and encourage them to learn the order of the months of the year.
As this term can be cold outside, please ensure that your child has warm P.E. kit for when they go out for games on a Tuesday morning.
Many thanks and a Happy New Year to you all!
Yesterday, Year 1 children went outside for an Autumn walk. We explored the bank behind the playground, collecting a variety of leaves. They had a great time kicking the leaves and using their senses to describe colours and sounds. Today, the children worked with their talk partners initially to put their thoughts into sentences. They then went on to write their own accounts of the walk, including lots of new and exciting words.
